Let's say I already have a site that is ranked within google. And I decided later on that I want to change the name, including the domain, would that in turn result in me having to do more SEO work to keep the site rank up? Or will it be fine if I change the name/domain?

Changing the name might cause some issues, but it's when you decide to change your domain that I think the problems come in. You'll probably have to start the SEO work all over again if it's not done correctly. Also, keep in mind that it could cause other issues by changing the domain. If you do decide to change, be ready to start your SEO work over.
