Backlinks from forums do not work?

I read this somewhere recently, that backlinks on forums/message boards do that work as traditional backlinks. It may have worked 10-15 years ago, but things have changed a lot since and I guess backlinks don't work in that way anymore.

I used to do this on forums in the past, but now I know it's probably a waste of time. Or is it still worth doing?

I heard that they aren't as useful as they used to be. In fact I think they hurt your site more since you're not really creating too many backlinks. Also I think if it's the same site, it doesn't help. But don't quote me on that as I may be wrong. Not sure.
